The waters in Switzerland are divided into categories from I (calm water) to VI. For Canoeing in Switzerland, SwitzerlandMobility uses the categories II – IV for guided rafting tours. Please also see Requirements. Thanks to professional guides, stable inflatable rafts and the equipment provided, it is possible to safely negotiate remote gorges and foaming rapids that would normally be reserved for very experienced paddlers. Knowledge of the water level is a prerequisite for deciding whether or not a stretch of water in navigable. The water level recommended for navigating rivers is provided under the heading «Helpful Hints» in the form of outward flow in cubic metres per second (M3/s). On river routes, a link to “Current Water Level” provides direct access to information from the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN on current water levels.
